4 4 Night Wine Wanderer – Self Drive

If it’s wine and food that you’re after, South Australia is simply paradise. There are 270 cellar doors across the state’s 17 wine regions, many selling fresh, regional produce. Best of all, most are within 90 minutes of Adelaide. With so many tempting options available so close to Adelaide, South Australia definitely stands out as one of Australia’s finest gourmet destinations.

After picking up your rental car in Adelaide, head 45 minutes south to McLaren Vale. With over 70 boutique wineries, McLaren Vale is best known for its great vineyard restaurants and relaxed coastal lifestyle. It's also a region of outstanding fresh produce – all of which can be tasted at Saturday's popular Willunga Farmers Market. Wander the main street of McLaren Vale exploring art studios, galleries and shops along the way. Indulge your sweet tooth at Medlow Confectionary or head off on the McLaren Vale Food and Wine Trail. Tonight, enjoy dinner as the sun goes down at the famous Star of Greece café, overlooking the spectacular beach and rugged coastline of Port Willunga. Overnight in McLaren Vale.

Make your way to the famous Barossa wine region, 90 minutes’ drive from McLaren Vale. To visit the Barossa is to taste the good life. Premium wines, including Barossa Valley Shiraz and Eden Valley Riesling, regional produce, and acclaimed restaurants provide a gastronomic experience second to none. Visit the region's cellar doors and wineries but don't let this indulgence get in the way of your transport plans. Hire a bike and check out the new Barossa Bike Trail, a scenic cycling track between Angaston and Nuriootpa that links the many wineries along the way. Overnight in Barossa.

Join the hustle and bustle of the Barossa Farmers Market, held every Saturday from 7.30am – 11.30am. There are more than 30 stalls to wander through and the freshest local produce available. Try the bacon and egg rolls with homemade sauce or chutney and freshly baked bread. It's the perfect start to the day! In the afternoon, have a go at blending your own wine at Penfold's Winery, or visit Maggie Beer's Farm shop at 2pm daily for a free cooking demonstration and to pick up some of the delicious treats to take home as gifts. Overnight in Barossa.

Thirty minutes’ drive north of the Barossa lies the Clare Valley, a picturesque wine region offering a taste of authentic country life at the foot of the Flinders Ranges and Outback. With more than 30 cellar doors, the region has a reputation for producing sensational Rieslings. Hire a bike and cycle a section of the Riesling Trail, or visit the historic Martindale Hall to explore this unique living museum. End the day with a glass of wine at Skillogalee Winery overlooking the vineyards. From the Clare Valley, it’s just 90 minutes’ drive to Adelaide, or why not carry on to the spectacular Flinders Ranges and Outback?
