3 Night Wine and Outback Explorer
Adelaide is the closest Australian city to the Outback, so it’s easy to discover this vast and stunning landscape. Just 4.5 hour’s drive north of Adelaide, the Flinders Ranges & Outback features vast open spaces, towering rock walls, spectacular gorges, abundant wildlife and Aboriginal culture and rock art. But why not take your time and stop in the boutique wine region, Clare Valley on the way.
Ninety minute’s drive north of Adelaide is the Clare Valley. A premium cool climate wine region, with more than 40 cellar doors to explore. Its oldest vineyard is Sevenhill Cellars, established by Jesuit Brothers in 1848. Enjoy lunch at Skillogalee Winery before visiting the heritage-listed village of Mintaro to enjoy a walk around the remarkable buildings. The magnificent 19th century mansion Martindale Hall is approximately 10 minutes drive from Mintaro and open to the public. The Riesling Trail is an excellent walking and cycling path, and links many wineries, cellar doors and attractions between the towns of Clare and Auburn.
Overnight Clare Valley
Leave the vines behind as you head towards Wilpena Pound in the spectacular Flinders Ranges & Outback. Travel to Wilpena via Melrose, the oldest town in the Flinders Ranges. It has a beautiful setting at the foot of Mount Remarkable, surrounded by national park. Then continue north to the former railway town of Quorn. Spend the afternoon taking in a few of the easy walking trails dotted throughout Wilpena Pound National Park and end the day with sunset nibbles and wine overlooking the Pound.
Overnight Wilpena Pound
Start the day with a scenic flight over Wilpena Pound before exploring the surrounding gorges either by 4WD tour or at your leisure. Maps are available from the local visitor centre, and be sure to keep an eye out for native animals and wildflowers, especially in September and October. For those who like to be active, a large network of bushwalking and mountain bike trails run throughout the Park, allowing you to view Wilpena Pound "from the inside". If relaxing and taking in the scenery is more your style, then sit back and enjoy a guided four-wheel drive tour through this ancient land.
Overnight Wilpena Pound
Travel back to Adelaide at leisure today, or if you’ve got the time, continue north and you'll come across the famous Prairie Hotel. Located in the tiny town of Parachilna – population 10, the hotel offers authentic Aussie outback hospitality. Share stories around the campfire with the locals and enjoy the locally brewed lager and a "feral foods platter". Or, add on a few extra days to your itinerary and venture north into opal country. Stay in an underground hotel in Coober Pedy and fossick, or "noodle" for opals. It's a nine-hour drive back to Adelaide or why not catch The Ghan and experience one of Australia's legendary train journeys.
Our SA Expert’s Top Tip
“A minimum of 2-3 days is recommended to explore Wilpena Pound as there is so much to see and do there. For a real treat, book a scenic flight from Wilpena Pound over Lake Eyre and see this magnificent salt pan in flood. Like a mirage, water extends to the horizon and wildlife flocks to the area. When empty, the lake becomes a giant salt pan, with white crystals reflecting the sunlight.”
